The Art of Diplomacy
These pictures show the fourth year busy plotting to take over Europe. Each group are the leaders of one of the Great Powers prior to World War One. Their task is to form alliances with other countries and to expand their territory. This entails good skills in negotiation, problem solving, strategic awareness, teamwork, and a fair measure of duplicity and deceit, all worthwhile skills to learn for the future. This also helps pupils to build upon their knowledge and understanding of the past, in particular the lead up to the First World War.
This set of lessons has been built around the role playing board game Diplomacy. This meets many of the requirements of ‘A Curriculum for Excellence' the new educational initiative from the Scottish Executive.
