Rector 1964-1977 James Hislop was born in Overtown, Lanarkshire, and he spent his early career in his native county. A Mathematics teacher, he wrote several textbooks in the subject, some of which were standard ones in Scottish schools. He was a deeply religious man at a time when faith was becoming unfashionable, being a leading lay preacher in the Christian Brethren in Scotland. He oversaw the transition of the Academy from senior secondary to comprehensive, the major educational changes of recent times. He was also a Governor of Craigie Teacher Training College, Ayr (now part of the University of Paisley), fighting to keep it open when its closure was threatened. On his retiral he was awarded the OBE for services to education. |
