Alexander Smith M.A

Rector 1852-1869

Alexander Smith was the Classics teacher at the Academy and a stern disciplinarian, remembered by a former pupil for sporting "a pair of tawse which were in frequent use, and were too efficient from the scholar's point of view, being capable, when artistically applied, of drawing blood from the finger tips. The body had the word "Minos" in large letters and each of the four limbs was decorated with a Latin inscription" (Gold Berry (Christmas 1909)). Smith's sense of humour was evidently sardonic, for Minos was the judge of the underworld. He was appointed after a period of lawlessness under the brief tenure of the previous rector and the Commissioners of Supply who appointed him over the heads of the school directors probably felt he would be the man to restore order.
