Alexander R. Cumming M.A.

Rector 1926-1938

Alexander Cumming came from Ferryden, Montrose, and was a graduate of Aberdeen University. He was a Classics teacher who was known for his scholarship, co-authoring two text books on the subject. Prior to his appointment at Kilmarnock Academy he was rector of Hermitage School, Helensburgh. He took a keen interest in the Academy Cadet Corps (see Kilmarnock Academy: Extra Curricular Activities), and succeeded in raising sufficient funds to obtain playing fields for the school, a long-standing lack. It was Cumming who also established the school house system, each house being named after a local castle&emdash;Craigie, Dean, Dundonald and Loudoun. A kindly and accessible individual, his interest in school ethos helped to foster good relations between staff and pupils. On his retiral he commended as a maxim a phrase from the Bible, "do justly, love mercy, walk humbly". It was adopted by his successor as the school motto.
