Pupils' Support During Absence

How can I stay fit and healthy?

Well, in reality, you can't stay fit and healthy all of the time. However, by doing regular exercise and having a healthy diet, you can certainly improve your chances of avoiding illness.

If you are absent from school for a day or two, it is normally fairly easy to catch up on things when you return to your classes. However, if you are going to be absent for longer than that, it is important that you try to keep up with your work. There are various measures in place to help you keep up with your work and these are listed further down this page.

It is important to the school that this help is available to all pupils - not just those who have a computer at home with internet access. In order to provide access to all - and as many of the help measures are dependent on you having a computer with access to our school website - the school has two computers available to loan to pupils who are absent long term but have no computer. These machines are older classroom machines that have been replaced with newer models. While they are not new or fast, they are certainly capable. They are also loaded with an up-to-date version of the school website - including subject areas with help, advice and revision exercises.

How do I know what to do?

We have various ways of keeping in touch with you and offering guidance and advice:

* Your Guidance teacher can collect work on your behalf and send it home to you via the person you have requested as your link-pupil.

* If you have a mobile phone we can text you.

* If you have e-mail we can give you written instructions and advice.

* If you have e-mail, we can send you notes and worksheets as e-mail attachments.

* If you don't have a computer then - as explained above - your parents can enquire about home use of one of two desktop computers available under such circumstances. This enquiry should be directed to your Guidance teacher.

* In cases of prolonged absence the education authority may grant a few hours of home tuition. You will require a medical certificate to be considered for this. Please contact the Head Teacher if you think you might be eligible.

What if I am too unwell to do work?

We are not suggesting that you do ten laps of the Kay Park or write and perform a one-man play. If you are confined to bed there are plenty of ways to keep up with things and they might even reduce the boredom – even a text book is more interesting than staring at the ceiling (unless it's Chemistry, of course).

If you are confined to bed you can :

Watch subject-related videos/DVD's (these can be borrowed from the library as well as subject departments).

Read through worksheets (the learning is in thinking out the answers – not in writing them down).

Read novels.

Revise your notes.

Read text books.

Listen to tapes/CD's of books. (You can find out what is available by clicking here.)
