NEW RANGE OF KILMARNOCK ACADEMY SCHOOL UNIFORMS

In response to quite understandable concerns expressed by some parents regarding the cost of school uniform, Mr Paterson has issued the following advice:
"White shirts can be purchased from Asda or Tesco at approximately £10 for a pack of three, and school ties are only £3. The new school jumper is good value in that it is very hard wearing and will easily last a whole school year. That said, parents may choose to purchase alternative black v necks  from elsewhere. The most important thing is that that our children take pride in themselves and in the school. Uniform is part of this, and I am convinced that our students will be seen as the smartest in town.

ALL S4, S5 & S6 PUPILS - KEEP WORKING HARD DURING STUDY LEAVE - IT WILL BE WORTH IT.

THE RIGHT ATTITUDE!

At present my first year class are working on a campaign to promote the positive aspects of Kilmarnock. Any questions I might have had about the commitment of these young people to the cause were surely answered by the e-mail below which was sent to the school website on Saturday evening at 6.04pm:

Dear Mr McIlvanney,

We were wondering whether Ms Black would let us into the computer suite (or your classroom). Why do we ask you? We need your help in getting us into the school at lunchtime because our Kilmarnock project needs a lot of work done. We were also wondering whether this could be our homework (instead of the smaller one) because we are putting a lot of effort in. This will not be an easy project to finish in a short amount of time. Your support in this would be much appreciated.

Yours Sincerely,
Callum & Eilidh

As their teacher, I find their enterprising attitude as well as their earnest and business-like enthusiasm for our class project both reassuring and satisfying - especially coming from two twelve-year-olds. That this matter was occupying their thoughts on a Saturday evening, not long before the BGT final, is also quite endearing. My answer to Callum & Eilidh: consider it sorted!

(The project will appear here soon.)                                                                                                                   N McI 14.5.2012

HRH Prince Charles

 PRINCE CHARLES VISITS KILMARNOCK

HRH Prince Charles will visit Kilmarnock today (Friday). The main  purpose of his visit is to officially open the renovated Johnnie Walker  Bond building in Strand Street. Later he will visit the North West Youth  Project in Onthank and the North West area centre in Western Road.  The Prince's visit will come as a boost to Onthank following the damage  caused to the area by the BBC's The Scheme which highlighted the  problems faced by several families "from Onthank" (only one of the  families actually lived in Onthank). Of course, the publicity the  programme generated only added to those problems and also had a  negative impact on the other residents of Onthank. We hope Prince  Charles enjoys his visit to the real Scheme.                                  N McI 11.5.2012

 ALTON TOWERS

Kilmarnock Academy’s annual school trip to Alton Towers will run on  Tuesday 26th June 2012. 133 pupils and 10 staff are taking part in this  exciting trip with 3 buses transporting them from the school to the  theme park and back again.

The bus will leave Kilmarnock Academy at 2am so pupils will be asked to  report to the school at 1.30am in order to register. We wouldn’t want  to leave without anyone! All those involved will spend the day at this  fantastic theme park and be asked to report back to the bus at 4.45pm  to set off from Alton towers at 5.15pm.

The total cost of the trip is £42. All pupils have paid a £15 deposit and  the balance is due on or before Monday 21st May. Pupils attending  must qualify through the school’s positive rewards scheme to take part.

This has been a very successful trip in the past and all pupils taking  part have a fabulous time – many do not wish to leave! This promises  to be a thrilling experience for all those involved.

Further information will be available from the school closer to the event.

CLASS 1S THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE

We got together as a class and thought about what Scotland would be like in 2050. We had a good laugh discussing and thinking about what it would be like and came to a conclusion to target three main areas. Our first area would be a 2050 classroom (what we think it will look like), second an invention that would make our lives easier and lastly write a diary about a day in our lives in 2050.

We set off individually and after a week of hard work we were finished all three areas we had thought about. Now we are sending them away to the SQA for judging in a competition
and hopefully have some winners and make all the hard work pay off. It was a good project to do and we all enjoyed doing it. To check out our ideas click here.

THE FINAL

COUNTDOWN

 SQA EXAMS 2012

The SQA exams start this week for S4 Standard Grade pupils. Yes, you  have heard it all before, but you really do only get one chance at this  level. The set of results you earn over the next few weeks will be with  you for the rest of your life. Employers and colleges will judge you by  these results and will view them as an indication of what you are  capable of. It's quite simple really: do well and you have choices;  do badly and you have none.

There is still time to make a real difference and to do yourself justice.  For the next month you are a full-time student - so act like one. Take  on the responsibility. Rise to the challenge. All anyone can ask of you is  that you give it your best shot. If you do you that then you will feel  good all summer and beyond. If  you don't... well, guilt and regret are  hard feelings to get rid of because  you can't turn the clock back and  change things. Think about it. But also do something about it - now.

If you need some help to get your study programme back on track or  even just a bit of advice on an aspect of exam preparation, speak to  any of your class teachers or to your Guidance teacher. Good Luck!

JACQUI CARR FROM AUSTRALIA - TRACKING DOWN THE BAINS

Hi I am trying to find out if some relatives went to or taught at Kilmarnock Academy. My grandmother Annabella Greenshields Bain went to KA. She was born in 1921, so may have gone there sometime in the 1930's. I was also wondering if any of the following names appear as pupils or teachers:

Matthew Campbell Bain (I think he may have attended in the 20's or 30's, as he then went to Glasgow University and became a surgeon - he emigrated to Singapore). Any other Bains during the 1800's with names such as Robina, Agnes, Janet, Henrietta, Francis, Archibald, James, John, Frank. Other surnames include Wyllie Bain, Young Bain (maybe George Young Bain in the early 1800's), Borland Bain, Hay Bain.

If you have lists you can send I would be happy to trail through them myself. I would be happy to reciprocate with photos if they did attend, as we have many old photos of these families.

I am from Irvine, my mother is from Kilmarnock. I now live in Australia, and have found a 4th cousin once removed in Sydney (my granny and her grandfather -Matthew Campbell Bain - were distance cousins). We are sharing some ancestry information and trying to learn more about our common ancestors. So I would appreciate any information you could provide.

Kind regards, Jacqui Carr                                                                                                       23.4.2012

DO YOU REMEMBER GRACE HALBERT PATTERSON?

Hi,

I am the eldest daughter of an only child, Grace Halbert Patterson (Luce Avenue?, Kilmarnock) - and Roy Charles Randall (Poole near Bournemouth in England)

Mum was born on the 5th of May 1940 and attended Kilmarnock Academy (exact dates unknown)
I believe she had a very strong friendship with a girl called Judy something?

Dad was stationed near Irvine and Troon during his National Service in the late 1950's and that is how he and Mum met. They were married in August 1960 and I was born November 8th 1961.

Unfortunately Mum died in the Spring of 1980 (Aged 39) and having just stumbled on this site I was wondering if anyone remembers Mum or has any information/photos they think will help me.

I was always led to believe that we were descended from the Missionary, David Livingstone via his brothers' line but we seem to have mislaid the paperwork Mum had listing the various Richards' and Janets' or was it Agnes'? I can't quite recall!

If any of this rings a bell with you, or a relative of yours, then please send an email to the KA notice board and I will periodically look at it just in case.

With many thanks from Mrs. Lynn Halbert Riggs                                                                                                                   11.4..2012

GORDON WILSON - FORMER PUPIL AT KILMARNOCK ACADEMY 1945 - 1954

Like others I accidentally discovered your website via google.

Lo and behold I find 3 contemporaries in Messrs Hamilton, Crosby, and Highet, all of whom shared my right of passage through KA from 1945 to 1954.

It sparked mostly happy memories of the school and the teaching staff of the period, particularly the latter who to a greater or lesser extent, instilled some values which were useful/essential in later life.

My favourite teachers brought to life their subjects and I have special memories of 'Bert' Findley who transformed Maths for me. Also Joe Syme, 'Sanny' Adamson (English) and J Gibson(chemistry). On the negative side was Davy Gordon, vested with responsibility for assessing 10/11 year old boys for secondary schooling. A stiff collar, tinted glasses, and brown suit (summer), blue suit (winter) represented his classroom uniform. In modern day parlance the nick name 'Psycho'  would have been appropriate as he ruled by fear. The strap was a daily occurrence and as mentioned by others, his aim with a chalk duster was pretty good. As a role model for later life eg.  'how to win friends and influence people', he was a total failure!

Leaving KA in 1954, I eventually graduated as a mechanical engineer after serving a student /apprenticeship with Glenfield & Kennedy, an institution in Kilmarnock which sadly no longer exists.

I subsequently moved to London in 1963 joining a firm of engineering consultants. In 1966 I joined a well known brewing company(think black stuff) and began a thirty year association which gave me the opportunity to work in Malaysia (10 year) Brazil (2 years) Nigeria (7 years) USA (Kentucky 3 years) and Australia (Sydney 3 years). During this time I met and married Sheila and we raised a family of two girls and a boy.

I retired in 1996 and we now live in Perthshire.

I hope that others locate your site and are able to share some of their life experiences. I certainly will check it from time to time.

With very best wishes,

Gordon Wilson                                                                                                                                                                                           11.4.2012

SCHOOL UNIFORM

Kilmarnock Academy pupils are the smartest in town. Let’s keep it that way! The school is moving towards all pupils wearing shirt and tie. New S1 pupils will receive a free tie as a gift from the parent council and school, and Senior Pupils (S5/S6) have a newly designed senior tie which must be worn at all times.

As a parent myself I do understand that you may still want your child to use  existing polo shirts and sweatshirts. I would however  strongly encourage you to move towards shirt and tie which is a smarter and often cheaper alternative.

From August 2012 uniform will be;

·         White/Black shirt and school tie

·         Black trousers or smart skirt – not leggings or mini skirts

·         Black V neck jumper or cardigan

·         Black shoes – trainers are for PE

·         Black tights

Many thanks for your support in this

IN ORDER TO MAKE THE QUIZ TEAM...

If you think that Caesura was a Roman Emperor, that Litotes is  something to do with bad breath, Archaic is something you would buy in  Gregg's the bakers and that Cliché is a left back for Man City then you  never will make the quiz team. You are also likely to find Higher English  fairly challenging (by the way that was euphemism... don't know what  that is either?). Not to worry - Mrs Thomson has compiled a list of all  those tricky English terms, complete with simple explanations.  ENGLISH STANDARD GRADE WRITING SUPPORT

If, like most of us, you are not at your creative best at nine o'clock in  the morning then you will sympathise with those students who have to  sit the Standard Grade Writing exam on the morning of 26th April.  However, there is a way to deal with the problem. The trick, you see, is  not to rely on inspiration but, like any good journalist, to rely on  technique. If you are not sure how to do that, Mrs Thomson has come  to the rescue with some seriously good advice on how to tackle the  Standard Grade Writing exam. To view it click here. And to view our  S  Grade Study Guide, featured on BBC Bitesize, click here.      N. McI 27..3.2012

Thanks to Mr Reidford for today providing History study support  materials for the History page on KA Web. These have been supplied in  Power Point format and have titles such as How Fully, The Issue, How  Far Agree and How Useful Secondary. I have no info on whether these  are S Grade, Int 1, 2 or Higher - just check with Mr Reidford. I would  normally present PPT files as web pages (as in Business Studies) but  that's a very time-consuming exercise and we really don't have a lot of  time left before the exams. Good luck with your studies. To view the  materials simply click here.                                                                       N. McI 26..3.2012

S2 VISIT TO CRAUFURDLAND CASTLE

At Craufurland estate we saw the Craufurdland Castle and its murder hole.  We learned that Mr Craufurd can trace his ancestors to William Wallace - he told us the story of how William Wallace became the guardian of Scotland. The house was great and had 3 extensions that were built along time ago and still have some of the original structures.  The oldest part of the building had drains that were for when someone attacked the castle.  They put boiling oil and water in them and it killed the men who were attacking, and if that didn’t kill them the archers in the murder hole would! The estate had chests that have gold, rubies, and more, but there was a ghost who made you forget about the chests. The chests are a myth… or are they?

Near the forest there’s a fishing loch and in the forest there’s a mountain biking track.  Not too far from the track we set up our fires in pairs.  We had to find tinder and wood and we got fire steal to light the fire. When we lit the fire we roasted marshmallows and had hot chocolate and then we went home.

ALLAN BURNETT VISIT

On Tuesday 6th of March, Allan Burnett came to our school and did a book signing. He is known for his “An All That” series of books, about the history of Scotland, although he is about to start a new series called ‘Tales of Adventure of WWII’ and he is currently doing a book on WWI .

When Allan Burnett visited our school library he did re-enactments of some of his books, including Macbeth. He asked for two volunteers and had Craig Clark (Kilmarnock Academy) and Jack Herrall (Kilmarnock Academy). Jack was lying on the floor pretending to be sleeping and Alan had Craig pretend to stab Jack with a pretend knife. He also did a re-enactment of St. Columba.

Allan then read some of his ‘Macbeth’ book. As he is a bit superstitious, at the end he had some of us recite a chant because the word ‘Macbeth’ is said to be a curse and many disasters have happened in plays because of using the word – as is shown in the back of his book.

Allan finished up by answering questions and signing our books. He had brought some of his books for us to buy and he gave two free books to Natalie Miller (Kilmarnock Academy) and Ben Weir (Kilmarnock Academy) for asking the two questions that intrigued him the most.

We were very excited to be at the Allan Burnett book signing and it was a great joy as we had lots of fun and a good laugh.

 SPORT RELIEF

This Friday, 23rd March, Kilmarnock Academy will be supporting Sport  Relief fundraising efforts by holding a dress as you please event. All  pupils are invited to wear sportswear, e.g. trainers, trackies, hoodies,  to school that day. All we ask is that pupils pay £1 for the privilege.  Proceeds will go to Sport Relief.

Triple P winners in S1 to S3 are also invited to take part in sporting  activities on Friday afternoon for a small charge of 50p. Again, this  money will go to Sport Relief. Pupils will have the choice of taking part  in a dance class, playing basketball or walking a mile in Kay Park that  afternoon. What better way to keep fit and healthy while raising money  for a good cause?

WELL DONE KILLIE!

KILLIE WIN THE SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP 2012 !

Congratulations to Kenny Shiels and his players on defeating Celtic 1-0 to lift the Scottish League Cup. The fact that Killie kept another clean sheet meant that they won the competition without conceding a single goal - quite an achievement! The whole team put in a fine performance to compete in all areas with a Celtic team that went into the game on a run of twenty-six domestic games unbeaten - their last defeat being a 0-1 home defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League back in November 2011. Killie's winning goal, worthy of winning any final, was scored in the 84th minute by Belgian birthday boy, Dieter van Tornhout.

Triumph turned to tragedy, however, at the final whistle when Mr Jack Kelly, the father of Killie midfielder Liam Kelly, collapsed next to the Kilmarnock dugout. He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to the Victoria Infirmary where he later died. Our thoughts at this very difficult time are with Liam, his family and friends.

 CHEMISTRY SUPPORT ON KA WEB

Mr Fyffe once said, "Chemistry does not have as much colouring-in or  word searches as Biology or Physics but does offer a sound education and  an impressive range of courses - S Grade, Int 1, Int 2, Higher and Advanced  Higher - all of which are constantly being improved." As part of that  improvement, Mr Fyffe has created an impressive range of study  support materials, some of which have now been uploaded to the  school website. So if you want to find out the differences between  ionic, covalent and premium bonds or why experiments never work or  the molecular structure of polytetracarbodichlorophynanickelobepop-  aluladioxidalmagnesiate or if, quite simply, you just want to pass your  Chemistry exam then click here.                                                            N.   MODERN STUDIES SUPPORT MATERIALS UPLOADED

Thanks to Mr MacKay, we now have a range of study support materials  in place for Standard Grade Modern Studies students. And, rather  cleverly, he has not only provided detailed notes on what to study:
                  STANDARD GRADE REVISION NOTES
but has also provided really helpful guidelines on how to study and  revise for Modern Studies:
                  STANDARD GRADE REVISION GUIDELINES
Now you have everything you need... so all you need to do is learn it.

In case you didn't know, you can also get Study Support and Revision materials in other subjects right here on the school website. As well as help in English, Maths, Music, Biology and Business Studies you can now find help in Religious Education, Geography, Media Studies and of course Modern Studies.

Extensive Chemistry support has also beenuploaded, courtesy of Mr Fyffe.

To get support in other subjects, just ask your class teacher.

  MORE MATHS SUPPORT MATERIALS UPLOADED

Thanks to Mrs Walker for providing a fantastic range of support  materials for Standard Grade Maths. These have been uploaded to the  Maths section of the school website. No fewer than twenty-six topics  are covered, ranging alphabetically from angles to volume. You'll find  everything from big sums to wee sums and easy stuff to pure  headscratchers. As it has taken a lot of time and effort to create and  upload these support materials, we would like all you Maths students to  do one thing - use them! Otherwise your teachers will be putting more  effort into ensuring your success than you are. And that's one equation  that never works out right. ALLAN WATT SHARES HIS MEMORIES OF KILMARNOCK ACADEMY 1955 - 1957

After seeing the graffiti picture of the ceiling of the tower on your website, I  was quite amazed to see my name and that of Bob Ellis still in evidence. My autograph is perhaps wearing better than I. Bob was the Sports editor and I was the Art editor of the Goldberry. That the Goldberry committee was even in the tower in 1957 was a story in itself. The Janitor of that time, a Mr. Keddie, clearly did not want the committee in the tower and had filled it with desks and chairs. It took a delegation of us to go to Mr. R. McIntyre aka “the beak” to overturn the janitor’s decision. Mr. Keddie was not amused.

Some of the accounts on your website brought back many memories ,  particularly the one mentioning names of former teachers.

Bill Craig comes to mind. He was a holy terror and I recall standing in the prefect’s room ( a Classroom on the third floor} observing clouds of smoke emanating from the boy’s toilets. At that time there was a playground which ran between the Academy building and the Tech. It was split by a wall with the girls on one side and the boys on the other and nary the twain should mix. This particular day large numbers of boys had entered the forbidden territory of the girls’ playground and a game of mixed football was underway. NOT LONG NOW TILL THE EXAMS!

With the May exams now only a matter of weeks away, you should have your study plan in place and be working hard to achieve success in all of your subjects. At the moment you should be making the most of your time in classes and asking your teachers about any subject areas or topics you are unsure about. If you identify the problem areas now, you will still have time to work on them and resolve any issues before the SQA exams. You should also be analysing your Past Papers so that you can familiarise yourself with exam layout, the wording of questions, types of questions and recurring questions. It is also really useful to study the marking instructions so that you can understand what the examiner is looking for and so that you can lay out your answers in a way that's easy and clear for the marker to follow. Attending Supported Study will also be of obvious benefit. To view the Supported Study timetable for March click here.

Remember that your future is entirely in your hands. Success in the SQA exams will provide you with more choices and the opportunity to secure a brighter future for yourself. Seize that opportunity - or you really will regret it.

I’d like to introduce myself to all the staff and pupils at Kilmarnock  Academy. I’m your new librarian, Miss Black. I’ve heard great things  about the school and I am excited about working with you all to make  our Library Resource Centre one of the best! I have had the chance to  meet some of you who have been using the library already. For those  who need a reminder of the opening times, they are:

MEDIA STUDIES PAGE ADDED TO KA WEB

Thanks to Mr Rigg, we now have a Media  Studies page which provides a range of  support materials to help you prepare for  Higher, Int 2 and Int 1 exams. It took Mr Rigg  a long time to create these materials so he  hopes that all of the Media Studies students  out there will not only find them useful but will  also invest some of their own time in ensuring  that they do well in the May exams.  ANDREW AIRD'S 1891 PRIZE

I bought this old book, “Robinson Crusoe”, at a yard sale last summer in  Canada. I bought it because my grandchildren like the classics and old  books. Last week I thought I would read it and when I opened it up, on  the fly leaf was the  picture enclosed. It was awarded to Andrew Aird,  June 29th 1891 for excelling in French and Writing.

The book itself is in quite good condition although the cover has been  reinforced.

 Sincerely, Phyllis Shoop

Thanks very much, Phyllis, for sending us the photo and the story of  how you came upon this little piece of Kilmarnock Academy history.

2011 SCHOOL YEAR BOOK AVAILABLE NOW

It has been a long time in the making but the 2011 Kilmarnock Academy School Year Book is now available to purchase. Mrs Hogg was so excited about the Year Book being ready that she forgot to mention how much it costs. As soon as she lets me know the price I will post that information on the website. EXPLORING THE PAST

Click on the maps below to see what Kilmarnock was like in days gone by.

FROM THE ARCHIVES - A VERY SPECIAL PIECE OF HISTORY

On Thursday, 1st May 2008, we received the following e-mail:

A friend gave me a book called: 'Cyclopedia of Female Biography'  Edited by H. G. Adams Glasgow Robert Forrester, Stock[page  damaged] 1866 What may interest you about it is that it was given to  a Kilmarnock Academy 'first class' student, Maggie King, in June 1869,  for winning 1st place in an arithmetic competition. There is an award  form adhered to the inside cover with this information filled in and  then signed by "Thomas Lee F.H[or]K. A.S., Master" of the Commercial  and Mathematics Department.

Someone loving carried the book with them across the ocean to the  United States, perhaps Ms King herself.

The book is now in a fragile state so I plan to donate it to the New  England Historical Genealogical Society in Boston, Massachusetts, for  safe-keeping. However, I have scanned the inside cover for your  benefit. The scan is attached as is a transcription of the award.

I hope the Academy appreciates this small piece of history and what it  must have gone through.

 Sincerely, Julia

Our thanks to Julia for sending us this special piece of K.A. history.

 29th FEBRUARY 2012

SO WHY DO WE HAVE LEAP YEARS?

It's all about getting the sums to  add up at the end of each four year  cycle. Quite simply, leap Years are needed to keep our calendar in  alignment with the Earth's revolutions around the sun. It takes the  Earth approximately 365.242199 days – or 365 days, 5 hours, 48  minutes, and 46 seconds – to circle once around the Sun. However, the  Gregorian calendar has only 365 days in a year, so if we didn't add a  day on February 29 nearly every 4 years, we would lose almost six  hours off our calendar every year. After only 100 years, our calendar  would be off by approximately 24 days. Now you know!           29.2.2012

WELCOME TO OUR NEW LIBRARIAN

 "WELL PLAYED!" GREGOR & EUAN

Gregor Keachie and Euan McIlvanney, two of our recent former pupils,  played to a packed house of around 500 at Oran Mor on Saturday 18th  March. The boys were accompanying singer-songwriter Max Murphy  from Glasgow who was the main support for headline band John Wean.  Gregor played piano and trumpet while Euan played drums, alongside  Max on vocals and acoustic guitar. Both boys also did backing vocals  throughout Max's set. Bass and percussion completed the line-up for  Max's band. Also on the bill were The Bangarangs and London band The  Branco Heist. S4 MOCK INTERVIEWS

These interviews will take place in March. All S4 pupils will apply for one of the jobs advertised. Your PSE teacher has a copy of the jobs but you may wish to look at the details again before you make up your mind.

Pupils in Grange and James Hamilton Academies will also be applying so your form will have to be completed to a high standard if you are to get an interview – 6 pupils per job.

We have had our own mock interviews and the winners have received their certificates. All pupils who completed an application form have received feedback so the next effort should be an improvement.

S4 pupils will start to apply for the jobs in the “Kilmarnock District Mock Interviews” this week.

SIR TOM HUNTER - ENTREPRENEURIAL CHALLENGE

David Hall, S2, represented the school at the Sir Tom Hunter Entrepreneurial Challenge Final which was held at East Ayrshire Council Chambers. David delivered an excellent presentation on his idea "The Handy Pack", which he designed as a solution to the long running problem of pupils having to ask their classmates or their teacher for a pencil. This innovative product would attach to your bag strap and would hold a pencil, rubber and a sharpener. David had visions of expanding this in the future to perhaps include a memory stick. The competition from other EA schools was fierce and the winning idea was Auchinleck Academy's MiMovie, a mobile phone application which recommended different movies to watch depending on your current mood. Well done David!

OUR MAN IN THE NEWS - ALL IS REVEALED

With regard to the feature further down this page, entitled Our Man In The News, we didn't have to wait very long to find out why Mr Kerr was going to be featured in the newspapers. After thirty-seven years of tireless service to Kilmarnock Academy, Gus has been nominated in the Lifetime Achievement category of the Daily Record Scottish Education Awards. Congratulations to Gus on this well-deserved nomination.  DEFINITELY "MR PATERSON"

Let there be no doubt that the Head Teacher who appears in the Daily  Record alongside Mr Kerr and who is referred to throughout as Mr  Swanson is in fact our own Mr Paterson. While most people would have  been a bit miffed at the error, Mr Paterson was philosophical about it  when he spoke to KA Web. "It was just an honest mistake and it  shouldn't detract from Gus's achievement - this piece is all about him.  In any case I really appreciate the time and effort put into the piece by  Craig McQueen and the support the Daily Record provides to schools in  Scotland through the Scottish Education Awards."                    N.McI 16.1.2012

Mr  Paterson knows all about it but he is giving nothing away. He would  only say, "It's a good news story for Kilmarnock Academy and for Mr  Kerr who has served the school so well for so many years. You're just  going to have to wait and see.... but it will be worth the wait."  S4, S5 & S6 - START PLANNING FOR SUCCESS NOW

The SQA exams may seem a long way off but they'll be here before you  know it so you should start planning for success now - if you haven't  done so already. It is easy to put things off till later and tell yourself a  whole range of excuses. However, with so much competition  for university places and job vacancies, you owe it to yourself to get  as much as you can from your time in school. Start organising your  study plan by checking the SQA Exam Timetable and taking a note of  the dates for your exams, the time remaining to prepare and a full list  of revision topics.                                                                                          N.McI 5.1.2012

CONGRATULATIONS TO FORMER PUPIL, IAN MIRFIN - BBC SPORTS UNSUNG HERO 2011

Congratulations to husband and wife team, Ian Mirfin and Janice Eaglesham, who won the BBC Sports Unsung Hero award for 2011 at the Sports Personality of the Year show last night. The Unsung Hero award which is now in its ninth year, recognises outstanding contributions and commitment by those who give up their own time to provide others with encouragement, enjoyment and greater access to sport within local communities. The couple were presented with the award by England footballer Michael Owen.

Ian was at Kilmarnock Academy in the seventies and is still good friends with one of his classmates in those days - our own Mr Taylor. Over the years Ian has occasionally participated in our staff five-a-side games on Fridays at 3.30.

Ian and Janice formed the Red Star Athletics Club in Glasgow 21 years ago to help promote the sporting development of disabled athletes. Over the years they have trained more than 150 disabled athletes, many of whom have enjoyed great success in international and Olympic competition.

On receiving the award Ian, who works as a staff development officer with South Lanarkshire Council, said: "I'm a bit shocked and stunned....Thanks to BBC Scotland for the support, it's resulted in more coverage of disability sport. We know many other people who are involved to a greater extent than us and this is an award for volunteers everywhere." For those who know Ian, such a humble and modest response will come as no surprise.

The XL Princes Trust group delivered Christmas parcels to the local elderly people in Mill Court on Thursday 22nd December. The parcels contained items such as soup, rice, ham, tuna, sweeties, biscuits and cakes. We delivered 27 parcels and people were very thankful and quite emotional when they received them. It is a regular thing we do every year at Christmas and it has always been a success. We have even got to know the elderly people in the area very well.

Thank you to all the people who participated from the XL group and to the people who brought in items for the parcels.

 EXCELLING IN SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT

This school has no fewer than 6 student internationalists, which is a  tremendous achievement and something the school is proud of and  keen to acknowledge formally. We will reintroduce “colours” for those  students who represent our country. And the future looks even brighter  as Kilmarnock Academy has first access to the new, state-of-the-art  athletics facility in Queens drive and we are also in the process of  building strong formal links with Kilmarnock Football Club. All of this  surely demonstrates that this school is seriously going places in terms  of promoting and supporting the sporting achievements of our students.

KILMARNOCK FC AT KILMARNOCK ACADEMY

On a recent visit to Kilmarnock Academy, Killie manager Kenny Shiels provided a large group of KA pupils with a truly inspirational team talk which covered such topics as pursuing personal goals, taking pride in your local community and the importance of teamwork. Kenny gave thoughtful answers to a whole range of questions and cited the great George Best as being his own boyhood hero and inspiration. Those who did not know who George Best was (and there were a few!) were directed to former pupil Hugh McIlvanney's piece Best Years of Our Lives which happens to feature on our own school website. Kenny was accompanied by Alex Pursehouse who gave an insight into the demands placed on players at a modern football club. We would like to thank Kenny and Alex for their visit and their talk. Of course, the best way to thank them is to go along to Rugby Park whenever there is a home game and support your local team!

Thanks to Mr McEwan, we not only have a very popular Book Club at KA but we also have a Book Club Blog where pupils can post reviews of the books they have read as well as get ideas and suggestions for their next read. The club, for S1 and S2 pupils, meets every Tuesday after school "to discuss our favourite books, rummage around in the Library and take part in other activities". All S1 and S2 pupils are welcome. To check out the Blog click here.

STUDY SUPPORT IN MATHS

A special thanks to Mrs Walker, Queen of Sums, for providing a fantastic range (and amount!) of study materials for Standard Grade General Maths as well as Intermediate 1 Maths.
These have been added to the Maths section of the school website and can be accessed by clicking here.

We already have extensive Study support in English, in Music and in Physics.            N McIlvanney 4.12.2011

WELCOME TO MY WORLD OF WORK

It often appears that those young people who have a clear idea of  what they want to do when they leave school, as well as what passes  they require, tend to be more successful in exams. It's all about  motivation and having a defined target. If you don't know what you  want to do but would like some help in making your mind up then the  new website from Skills Development Scotland - My World of Work -  should help you to make an informed decision.          N McIlvanney 13.10.2011

 PARENT ZONE

For all the parents out there who who want to find out more about  such topics as Curriculum for Excellence and Supporting Learning at  Home, LT Scotland has created the Parent Zone. Check it out.
