WW1 "Private Peaceful" - Kym Blaney

THE WAR DIARIES

5.00am
I wake up to a freezing cold day. Others are already awake. My stomach is rumbling. I wonder if its porridge or soup. I can smell it. Porridge again. It's not the best I've tasted. Mum's was the best. Thinking of her I want to go home. I miss her so much. Well, at least today we get our letters from home.

5.30am
My clothes are all wet and now are too big for me. I feel that my toes and fingers are going to fall off. It has started to snow. Even colder. I hear gunshots in the distance. We sit in silence listening to the screams and terror that filled the air.

5.55am
It starts to get light and we prepare. I don't want to do this but I want to make my family proud of me.

6.00am
Time now to make our way outside. The sergeant speaks “Right troops, we all know what's going to happen so when we go out I want you to do what you do best. Good luck out there”
