THE WAR DIARIES |
6.30am - Its cold, muddy and I am freezing my feet off on the night patrol. It's been raining all night and I am soaked through! My feet are in agony for they are swollen in my boots after walking in water all night! I'm tired and hungry and I hope breakfast is coming soon. 7.00am - I'm just off night patrol. Nothing much happened. Nothing much ever happens on night patrol anyway. I'm going to try to get some sleep but I doubt I'll get much with all the noise. Nobody ever gets much sleep around here. Everybody's tired all the time. It's amazing we can stay awake during the day never mind at night as well! 7.30am - Brilliant! All I got was half an hour of sleep before the sergeant came in raving and balling about how lazy we are and how we should be ashamed of ourselves. So we got up and went out side to do some drills. 8.00am - Time for breakfast. The food isn't very nice or warm and actually there isn't much of it but its food and we are very grateful to have it. 8.30am - As we all walk out to the trenches, the sergeant starts to shout out orders to everyone about where we should be in the trench. But what he doesn't realise is that we are all ignoring him because earlier we all pulled straws. Whoever got the longest straw got the driest bit of trench but the unlucky soldier who pulled the shortest straw got the bit of trench that was flooded. Anyway what the sergeant doesn't know won't kill him, or maybe it will! 9.00am - Unlucky for me I am the poor soldier that pulled the short straw and now I have to stay, in the dirty freezing water, until lunchtime! 10.00am - “It's a gas attack!” shouted the sergeant. We all get our gas masks out, and over our faces, as fast as we can! We dare not take them off as the gas could seriously damage your lungs or worse kill you! Next thing you know, the Germans are trying to invade our trenches but we stand we fight! We fight until we are all out of energy and then we fight a bit more! 12.00pm - At last the fighting stopped! Two hours after the fighting began it stopped. We lost about a dozen or so men today! Its at times like this you really miss your family. You wish you were back home with them. With your mum, dad, sisters and your little brother! Anyway time for lunch which is a good thing because I am starving! 1.00pm - The sergeant is annoyed that we lost so many men today, either because they didn't get their masks on in time, they had been killed by Germans or they had slipped and their gas masks had been knocked off. He is making us do drills and making sure we do them right! If we get them wrong we have to start from the beginning. I have feeling this might take a while! 2.30pm - We have just finished doing drills and we are all shattered. We are allowed some time to ourselves now as this is when we get to read the letters our families have sent us and we can write back too. I got a letter from home today saying how they all love and miss me and that they hope I get home safely and soon! I think I'm going to try to sleep for the rest of the free time! 3.30pm - Free times over. Time to get back to work! Back to the trenches we go. Into the places we had earlier except the trench looks a bit emptier with so many people dead and injured. The trench is wet with blood, German and British. It's horrible when all the mud squelches beneath your feet. 6.00pm - We have just came back from the trenches and are cold, wet and hungry. I think its time to go get some egg, chips and beer from the pub! Sometimes it's nice to just sit back with your pals and relax! 8.00pm - Back we go to our bunks and we are just in time to hear the radio news as it says the war will be over soon. All it will take is just one big push and we will have won. It always says one push and we have won but then we push and the war still keeps going on. I wonder when this war will end. I hope it's soon! 9.00pm - Time for bed! We are all going to try to get some sleep and I think we are all so tired today that even a bomb wouldn't wake us up! Night! Night! By Kelsey McIntosh 2B2 |
