Vanessa Riddle Appeal (Mrs Hamilton)
Thank you to all staff and pupils who donated money on Friday. We raised £325. All the Ayrshire schools were asked to help and a lot of them have done so.
Thank you for your generosity, particularly those who gave more than was asked. I spoke to the main organiser on the phone and a letter of thanks will arrive in due course. As you would expect, the tremendous response is stretching them. Keep an eye on the ever rising total and feel good that you are a part of it. I believe it is now nearly at £200,000. |

Asking out of class to go to the bathroom (Mrs Walker)
Pupils are reminded that they should be making use of bathroom facilities at intervals and lunchtimes. They should not be asking out of class to visit the bathroom during class time. This is disruptive to their class mates and also means that they themselves miss valuable teaching time. No pupil should be asking out of any class to go to the bathroom but this is particularly true during periods 1, 3 or 5 i.e. immediately after a break. |

Finance Day – (Mrs Hamilton)
I would like to thank all staff (teaching, clerical and janitorial) and pupils who helped make Finance Day go so well. I must compliment pupils in S1, S2, S3 and S4 for their behaviour and effort in the Assemblies. It was interesting to see the S5 pupils who applied themselves to the tasks in 5th Gear and those who have not quite crossed the “maturity divide.”
Well done to staff and pupils who came in fancy dress. Each year group winner won £5. There was £5 for the winner of the Percy Pig competition and the S6 holiday competition. There was a prize for the winner of the staff financial quiz. There will be a full prize list including the inter-house points in next week’s bulletin.
The bag packing in ASDA raised £314.84 and the pupils who volunteered for an hour’s packing did us proud as usual. It was disappointing that there were not more volunteers as the shop was very busy and I would describe it as a “lost opportunity” to really cash in. Added to the money raised by the non uniform day, the total is very respectable but in this day and age, we must take every chance to boost the school fund because this affects us all in one way or another.
Finance Day prize winners
S1 Fancy Dress Ewan White
S2 Fancy Dress Bryce Campbell
S3 Fancy Dress Calum Don
S4 Fancy Dress Shannon Cruikshank and Katie Gilbert
S5 Fancy Dress Jamie McIver
S6 Holiday Competition: Heather Renwick

Finance Day (Mrs Hamilton)
Friday 28th October is Hallowe’en in Kilmarnock and more importantly it is Finance Day. For those who do not know what Finance Day means (and I have been asked), it means awareness of money, what you spend and the consequences of spending too much.
Kilmarnock Academy Finance Day Friday 28th October 2011 (Kilmarnock’s Hallowe’en)
Finance Week has shrunk to Finance Day but we hope to make an impact all the same. The outline of the day is as follows –
Non uniform day pay £1.
Pupils come to school in fancy dress - free. A financial theme would be good but not essential.
Finance Assemblies
S1 at P1: S2 at P2; S3 at P3 and S4 at P4
Lunchtime: Percy Pig goes walkabout
S5 - P5/6 “Fifth Gear” in the Assembly Hall.
S6 – some of them will be helping during the day. Possible IT investigation P6
There will be financial prizes for the various competitions during the day.
Department Input
As in previous years, please include a financial slant to your lessons – perhaps a “starter” which is relevant to your subject. Eg: French - how much it costs to go to the cinema in France. Compare with here. Biology – cost of disposable nappies versus traditional terry towelling nappies. etc etc.
PTs please let me know your dept input. Email is fine.

All pupils (Mr Paterson)
Please remember that you must behave at all times when you go down town for lunch. Do not get dragged in to situations such as fights or arguments by other people. Remember you are ambassadors for the school and we have high standards and expectations for everyone.
Some students persist on throwing sweets etc on the playground. This must stop immediately since in the past week 2 cars have been hit.
I am most impressed with the hard work and attitude with senior pupils in this school. The prefects in particular do a marvellous job and this has been comments on by a wide range of visitors to the school.
I am giving fair warning to all female students that the length of skirts is now unacceptable and I will be seeking your parents support in this. |

Behaviour and attitude (Mr Paterson)
Having now been in post for just over a week, I have to say I am very impressed with the attitude and behaviour of almost all students in this school. I am however, absolutely appalled at the number of students who seem to think it is acceptable for use foul and abusive language not only in the playground but also outwith school. A number of members of the public have already spoken to me on this. If we are really serious about ensuring that Kilmarnock Academy has a very positive reputation in the community, we must stop this nonsense.
I also have to say that I am concerned about a very small number of students who would appear to be disrupting your learning. This will be dealt with severely. Either students comply with the values of the school and students within it or there will be a consequence. |

Interval (Mr Paterson)
This is confirm that no student should be outwith the school grounds at the morning break. Again, a small number of students seem to think it is okay to smoke in the slope. This is absolutely forbidden. Again, a number of adults in the community are making complaints about the attitude and language of Kilmarnock Academy students. This is quite unfair given the very good behaviour of the vast majority. |

Lunch (Mr Paterson)
I am impressed with the range of food available in the kitchen, but surprised that the main meals counter is so under used. On a daily basis, this counter has meals such as curry, bolognaise, chilli, steak pie etc which is much better value than the food that can be bought elsewhere. I would encourage you to use the metro. |
